Universal Events Team
Universal Events, Inc.
This spring, Universal Events partnered with a regional literacy nonprofit to put 1,000 brand-new books into the hands of students at 12 Title I elementary schools — schools where the majority of students come from low-income families and where access to new books at home is often limited.
Every student in participating classrooms received a book to take home and keep. No circulation, no return — theirs to read, re-read, and add to a growing home library.
“When a kid gets a book that's truly theirs, something shifts. They're not borrowing a story. They're owning one.”
The Ripple Effect
Within three weeks of the book distribution, teachers at four of the 12 schools reported a measurable uptick in library-time requests — some as much as three times their usual baseline. Students who had rarely volunteered to read aloud were now bringing books to class and asking to share them.
Research consistently shows that children with 20 or more books at home advance significantly further in school than those without. This drive isn't a solution to the literacy gap — but it is one small, real contribution to closing it.
What's Next
The partnership continues through the rest of the school year, with a second distribution planned for October. Universal Events has committed to matching every dollar raised by the partner nonprofit through the end of 2026 — and team members are volunteering at school reading events across five cities.
