There are a number of similarities between sports and business, and we at Universal Events, Inc., find it particularly easy to find parallels between the business world and baseball. Here are few lessons we have learned from America’s pastime.

  • Passion is Vital: Great business people, great baseball players, even great coaches have one thing in common: a passion for the game.
  • Know What Winning Looks Like: In baseball, the rules of the game are clearly defined. Everyone playing knows what it takes to win, and you need that kind of clarity in your organization as well.
  • Teamwork Makes All the Difference: Star players may help win a game (or close a lucrative deal), but it takes a team to win consistently over the long haul.
  • Let Failures Go: The absolute best batters fail to hit the ball two out of three times at bat. Look at what you’ve accomplished to define yourself, not the mistakes you’ve made.
  • Reward Effort, Not Just Results: Winning games is obviously the goal, but games are won through many hours of practice and consistently good performance.
  • Eye on the Ball: There is a lot going on in a game, but knowing where the ball is at all times is crucial to winning. You should have the same awareness of your goals, regardless of what else may be happening.
  • Find Ways to Deal with Pressure: Competition in both baseball and business can be fierce, and pressure is a fact of life for any top performer.

Passion, clarity, focus, collaboration, leadership, stress management – crucial elements in both baseball and business.
