Universal Events Wants You to Reduce Stress

At Universal Events, we believe reducing stress is a key element of success. Therefore, we are always looking for ways to incorporate routines into our workday to make things more calm and predictable. Some people find daily habits to be freeing. Our team at Universal Events recently read a book called “Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives,” by Gretchen Rubin. Rubin believes that predictability is the key to a low-stress work environment. She explains that establishing routines eliminates the need for excessive decision-making. For instance, when you wake up in the morning, you get out of bed and brush your teeth. It’s not something you think about, and you certainly don’t have to discuss it with anyone. It’s an automatic and stress-free activity. During the workday, there are plenty of activities that can be accomplished on a pre-determined schedule, such as going to the gym and checking email. In her book, Rubin also discusses how people tolerate routine. She labels them as Upholders, Obligers, Questioners, and Rebels. Upholders tend to enjoy structure, while Questioners will respond to expectations that make sense to them. Obligers like to please others, while Rebels are, unsurprisingly, resistant to rules. Rubin considers herself to be an Upholder, which enables her to adopt habits easily. When you know which category you belong to, you can tailor your habits to optimally fit your personality. Though Rubin thrives in a highly structured environment, a Rebel might not like to eat the same thing for lunch every day. Therefore, our team at Universal Events advises that you think about how your habits can work for you. After all, you know yourself better than anyone else.
